Disability Sport NI Appoints New Chairperson

Barry Macaulay, Chairperson of Disability Sport NI stepped down from the Board of Directors at the February Board meeting after almost eight years of service, the last two of which he served as Chairperson. He was replaced by fellow Board member Michael McAteer MBE.

Commenting on the change Barry said, “I have been involved with Disability Sport NI for a long time and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the charity. We have faced highs and lows throughout the years so I am happy to say that I am stepping aside at a time when the charity is in a strong position of growth and development.

“Disability Sport NI is a trailblazer for inclusion in sport in Northern Ireland and I will always be a strong advocate for the work they do. I am humbled by the opportunities that I have had throughout the years to get involved in some fantastic projects and meet some very inspiring people.”

Commenting on the change Kevin O’Neill Chief Executive of Disability Sport NI said, “Barry has an obvious passion for sport and disability sport in particular and has provided strong and insightful leadership to our charity during his time as Chairperson.

“However Michael has been a very proactive and supportive board member for over five years and has equally demonstrated his passion for disability sport and a more inclusive sporting environment, so I am confident that he will continue to drive our charity forward.”

In accepting the new role Michael said, “I am honoured to accept the position of Chairperson. Disability Sport NI is a charity that I have avidly supported and embraced as a very important part of my life for over five years now. There are a number of exciting new developments happening within the charity and I look forward to building upon these and striving towards our vision of an inclusive society where people with disabilities fully participate in all aspects of life, including sport and active recreation. “
