ACCESS NI UPDATE

From Paul Stephenson, Child Protection in Sport Unit:

"Following a few calls from governing bodies & others this week I have spoken to AccessNI staff about their service standards which was 4 weeks turn around for 90% of enhanced checks. Unfortunately they are not meeting their targets and inform me that have written to all registered bodies. The following text is on their web site and they have staff working at weekends to resolve the issue. These checks as we remind people are only one aspect of safe recruitment but sports must consider this delay when planning events. I will raise delay with the NIO through the NSPCC as this increase in volume could have been predicted given the experiences of the CRB in the past".

Service Standards - Enhanced Applications
Due to the large volume of applications received and due to implementation issues, AccessNI has revised its service standards for the delivery of Enhanced disclosure certificates. The new standard is to deliver;

90% of Enhanced certificates within 6-8 weeks We would apologise to all our customers for this delay. We are working hard to resolve this and hope to return to a 4 week turnaround in Autumn 2008. In the meantime, you are urged to send applications to AccessNI as quickly as possible to reduce potential impact of this on your organisation.

EIGHT NORTHERN IRELAND VENUES MAY HOST TRAINING FOR PARALYMP

Stormont Sports Minister Edwin Poots said the facilities would work together to create three 'sports hubs' centred in Belfast, Jordanstown and Bangor.

The will be included on a guide being prepared to help nations pick suitable pre-games bases ahead of the Paralympic event in London.

Twenty seven venues north of the border have already been selected as potential camps for the main Olympic games in 2012.

The eight Paralympic venues to be included in the guide are:

Antrim Forum Complex
Ballyholme Yacht Club
Bangor Castle Leisure Centre
Bangor Sportsplex
Mary Peters Athletics Track
University of Ulster at Jordanstown
Carrickfergus Sailing Club
Queen's Sport, Queen's University Belfast
Mr Poots said he was confident Northern Ireland would attract athletes from around the world.

"The eight facilities will work together to create three multi-sport hubs, led by the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, Bangor Castle Leisure Centre and Queen's Sport, Queen's University Belfast," he said.

"Together they will offer the National Paralympic Committees an opportunity to train at camps that cater for 17 of the 21 Paralympic disciplines.

"In order to be included in the Guide, venues must be multi-disciplinary and capable of hosting an entire team who could be training for up to 21 different sporting disciplines.

"The venues selected from Northern Ireland are excellent examples of the high-quality sports facilities available. They will have a central hub and use a number of satellite venues to accommodate the visiting athletes.

"In March I announced that 27 venues in Northern Ireland were chosen to appear in the Guide as Olympic Pre-Games Training Camps. I want to see a legacy from London 2012 that will last far beyond the Games. Our aim is to host at least 10 Olympic and Paralympic Pre-Games Training Camps across Northern Ireland.

"We want to be a destination of choice for athletes and showcase our quality sporting venues and facilities in what will be the biggest show in town in the summer of 2012."
