The following is a position within Archery NI that requires volunteer(s) to step up and take a share of the job that needs doing to make ANI an effective organisation.

Positions are open to all who are qualified and have the necessary skills and time to satisfy the position requirements.

Position: Safeguarding Officer(s)

Reporting to: Independent Director

Position description:

Archery NI is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We are committed to inclusion and embrace the spirit of all equality legislation. Archery NI is looking to recruit volunteer Safeguarding Officers. The role(s) is voluntary but expenses in line with Archery NI’s policies will be reimbursed. The volunteer role(s) will report to the Independent Director and support the overall culture of safeguarding, safety and welfare within the sport.

About the role

Archery NI Safeguarding Officer(s) will have primary responsibility for managing and reporting concerns about children/vulnerable adults and for putting into place procedures to safeguard children/vulnerable adults and supporting club safeguarding officers where relevant.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

In summary, these are the main responsibilities of the Safeguarding Officer:

  • Be the first point of contact for anyone with concerns about poor practice, welfare or abuse
  • Implement reporting and recording procedures
  • Familiarise yourself with Archery NI & Archery GB’s policies and procedures
  • Support the relevant Director with developing and promoting a culture of safety and welfare within the sport
  • Understand the disciplinary procedures
  • Maintain contact details for key stakeholders including local police and Child Protection in Sport Unit
  • Promote best practice, anti-discriminatory practice and code of conduct
  • Promote safeguarding training including refresher courses amongst clubs
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Keep own knowledge and skills up-to-date

  • Ability to take responsibility for providing information about local resources, such as written material
  • Ability to promote policies, procedures and resources

Knowledge

  • Role and responsibilities of statutory agencies
  • Planning processes for safeguarding and child-protection enquiries and investigations
  • Behaviour that is harmful to children/vulnerable adults, thresholds of poor practice and abusive behaviour
  • Organisation’s policy and procedures related to safeguarding and protecting children/vulnerable adults
  • Core values and principles of work with children
  • Best practice in prevention
  • Legislation, government guidance and national framework for safeguarding children
  • How adults groom children for abuse

Qualifications & Background Checks

As part of the role, the Safeguarding Officer(s) will need to complete or have previously completed the following qualifications or relevant equivalent:

  • Safeguarding Children & Young People training
  • Designated Safeguarding Children’s Officer training

In addition, the post holder(s) will need to undergo the relevant criminal records checks such as Access NI Enhanced Check or an Archery GB Enhanced DBS check.

Time Commitment (estimated):

Around 1 day per month however Archery NI are keen to talk to anyone interested in the role.
