Parents in Sport Week 3-9th Oct 2016

The NISF have joined with more than 100 sports organisations in the UK and Ireland to promote Parents in Sport Week from October 3rd– 9th. This week is an opportunity to underscore the positive, supporting role that parents play in youth sport. Coaches and officials can also examine the importance of their communication with parents to benefit children’s involvement in sport. Please consider signing up to support the initiative to recognise the important contribution parents and carers play in supporting their child’s participation in sport. All too often, we only hear negative stories about extreme poor behaviour from the side-lines. This negative parental behaviour takes away from a child’s experience of sport or their desire to continue participating within sport, as they no longer see taking part in sport as fun.

Unfortunately, this is leading to some coaches and organisations limiting parents involvement, which subsequently affects children’s experiences.

Through Parents in Sport week, we are hoping to change the conversation and remind everyone of the important and extremely valuable contribution parents make to youth sport.

3 key outcomes

The key outcomes that Parents in Sport Week aims to achieve are:

  • to encourage sports organisations and clubs to promote the positive role parents play in helping children reach their full potential
  • to empower parents by sharing information regarding key roles they can do as a sports parent in supporting their child’s participation, success and fun, and therefore retaining a child’s interest in sport
  • to assist coaches and officials to understand the crucial role parents have in a child’s participation and continued involvement in sport

Through Parents in Sport Week, the NISF,NSPCC and sports organisations hope to highlight the essential role parents have to a child’s enjoyment and success in playing sport. For more information visit: https://thecpsu.org.uk/news/2016/april/play-your-part-in-parents-week/
