The Conference, organised by the Law Society of Northern Ireland in association with the Northern Ireland Sports Forum will, in addition to the usual comprehensive update, have prominent speakers in the medical, legal and insurance fields, with academic and judicial input, to look at the challenges lawyers face in advising their clients – whether they be governing bodies, clubs, managers, coaches, players or officials.
Topics to be covered include concussion and general injury management and the consequent risks and liabilities. The Conference will draw on the expertise of an experienced panel for concluding questions and discussion.
The Conference will commence at 9am and will conclude with lunch, discussion and networking from 1.15pm – 2pm.
Presenters and participants will include:
Paddy Wallace, capped 30 times for Ireland and was a Six Nations Grand Slam winner in 2009 and also record appearance holder for Ulster.
Keith McGarry, SportsLawNI and Conn & Fenton Solicitors will provide an update on current issues;
Mr Richard Nicholas – Consultant, FRCS Edin (Trauma & Orthopaedics), FRCSI (Sports & Exercise Medicine) FFSEM (UK) has 18 years medical involvement with Ulster/Ireland Rugby. Richard – a former IRFU Ulster Rugby Referee – will highlight concussion and sports injury management and is leading the Rugby Injury Surveillance in Ulster Schools (RISUS) programme.
David Christmas – Chartered Insurer and Head of Leisure and NGB development at Bluefin Sport will discuss the risks and liabilities from an insurance perspective.
An expert panel involving all speakers and in addition including Feargal Logan, Logan & Corry Solicitors and Tyrone Under 21 GAA manager, Professor Jack Anderson, Queen’s University, Belfast and Dr Phil Glasgow, leading Sports Physio and Head of Sports Sports Medicine at the Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI).
