A Research Agenda for Recognising the Value of Sport and Physical Activity in Northern Ireland

Date: 15 April
Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
Location: Ulster University, Belfast Campus
This session will feature Professor Simon Shibli, a leading expert in sport management and the economics of sport, and will explore how stronger, more coherent evidence can better demonstrate the true value of sport and physical activity.
Despite the widely recognised benefits of sport, its contribution is often underestimated due to fragmented or outdated data . This event will examine how we can address that gap and strengthen the case for investment, policy support, and long-term development.
Key topics will include:
  • The under-recognition of sport within national accounting systems
  • The role of Sport Satellite Accounts in capturing economic value
  • How evidence can drive funding and investment decisions
  • The social and health value of sport and physical activity
  • The need for a coordinated, strategic research programme
This will be an interactive session bringing together colleagues from across sport, policy, and research to share insights and shape future direction.
