Board Vacancies with The Canoe Association of NI

The Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI) is the governing body responsible for the management, co-ordination, development and promotion of canoeing in Northern Ireland. We represent the interests of our members to government, the public and through British Canoeing to the International Canoe Federation.

CANI is starting the final year of our 2017 – 2021 strategic plan “Canoeing For All” which aims to Inspire people to pursue a passion for paddling; for health, enjoyment, friendship, challenge and achievement.  We are starting to develop the strategy for the next 4-year cycle.

There are ambitious targets within the plan to develop all aspects of the sport and additional skills are required within the board to deliver the strategy. This is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the implementation of the strategy for the development of Canoeing and to build on the success within the sport.

Finance Director Role

CANI seek a Finance Director to ensure that controls and systems are in place to safeguard the financial governance of CANI to the satisfaction of the membership, to provide financial advice and support to the CANI Board and the chief officer and to carry out operational financial matters with the finance officer.

Applicants will have a strong financial background and preferably be an accountant or experienced at financial management.

Additional Roles

To meet the skills required we are now seeking to appoint three independent directors for the following roles;

  • Coaching
  • Performance sport
  • Recreational paddling

No prior experience of canoeing is required, although knowledge or experience of the sport or outdoor activity sectors would be an advantage. We currently hold monthly board meetings. The meetings usually take place at the CANI office in Belfast. There will be the opportunity to take on additional roles.

The Director roles are voluntary, although all reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be refunded.

The appointee will serve until the AGM in autumn 2020 and will then be eligible to stand for election to the post for a 2-year term.  Directors can serve a maximum of 3 terms.

CANI is an equal opportunities employer, and applications are welcome from all suitably qualified individuals. We are particularly interested in achieving gender parity and diversity on our Board. We, therefore, welcome applications from individuals who can help us achieve this.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to informal interviews, which will take place as soon as possible after the closing date.

To discuss the roles prior to application contact the chairperson of CANI, Stephen Craig at chairperson@cani.org.uk

To apply – email a letter of application along with a CV and return to chairperson@cani.org.uk
