Mary Peters has accepted an invitation to take up the role of Lord Lieutenant of the County Borough of the city.
Olympic legend Dame Mary Peters – the hero of the 1972 Games in Munich, has accepted an invitation to take up the role of Lord Lieutenant of the County Borough of the city. She will become the Queen’s representative for Belfast, replacing the current incumbent Lady Romayne Carswell when she retires in August.
After her success at Munich, Dame Mary has strived to encourage young people in Northern Ireland to become involved in sport and has remained constantly involved in track and field events. She has devoted much of her time to raising funds to help young athletes in the province compete at the highest level through support from the Mary Peters Trust.
Dame Mary Peters said she was extremely humbled by to this latest honour.
