PROPOSALS TO CREATE AN ULSTER SPORTS MUSEUM

Proposals are currently being developed by a new non for profit body, the Ulster Sports Museum Association, to create an Ulster Sports Museums.

The concept is to create a museum that will record and celebrate the story of Ulster’s outstanding sports men and women, including providing for the display of medals, trophies and other memorabilia and the extensive use of film and video material.

The intention is that the museum would be located in the Old Museum Building in College Square North in Belfast city centre; this is a listed building owned by the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society which housed the city’s first museum.

The tentative timetable envisages the museum being open by 2012 when the Olympic Games are in London. In the interim period, the possibility is being explored of creating a travelling exhibition around the theme of “Ulster’s Sporting Greats” that might be moved around the local museums and be located at a few major sporting events.

The Ulster Sports Museum Association will be launching the concept within the next month in conjunction with the Belfast Telegraph who will be running a number of special features to promote debate about who might be celebrated in the museum.

With this in mind the Ulster Sports Museum Association want you to be part of it and would be very happy to provide you with further background on the proposal.

It would be very helpful if you could nominate someone within your sport / organisation who could work with the Ulster Sports Museum Association as they develop our ideas and plans – so contact Brian Morrison, Secretary, NOW on E: brian.p.morrison@btinternet.com
