Rowing Ireland seeks Independent Director for Board

Independent Director Vacancies – Rowing Ireland

Rowing Ireland currently has three vacancies on its Board for Independent Directors. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the organisation and make a meaningful impact. Independent Directors will collaborate closely with the Board to develop strategies, set goals, and make important decisions that define the direction of Rowing Ireland.

The organisation’s vision is: “Spearheading excellence, strong clubs, and rowing for life.”

Skills Sought
The Board has identified a need for expertise in the following areas:

  • Accounting / Financial Management / Governance
  • Organisational Change Management / HR
  • Communications / Commercial / Fundraising

Preference will be given to candidates who possess at least one of these skills.

Board Diversity and Inclusion
Rowing Ireland is committed to achieving diversity within its governance structure. The Board aims to have at least 40% of each gender represented and seeks to replicate this balance across its committees. Applications are particularly encouraged from under-represented communities.

A comprehensive induction process will be provided for all new Board members to ensure they are well-prepared to contribute effectively.

Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will bring independence of thought and perspective to the Board, with the ability to question, challenge, and contribute to better decision-making. Strong leadership skills and a commitment to excellence are essential. While experience in sports management is welcome, it is not a prerequisite. Candidates from a variety of professional backgrounds, including business or related fields, are encouraged to apply.

Board Composition and Leadership
The current Board consists of eight Directors, led by the Chair, and represents a diverse range of skills and experiences. Further information about the current Board members is available on Rowing Ireland’s website: www.rowingireland.ie/about-us/board.

Expected Commitment

  • The Board meets approximately six times a year, typically on Saturdays or Sundays, with additional meetings as required.
  • Meetings are usually held at Sport Ireland HQ in Blanchardstown, Dublin, at 9:30 am, but occasionally take place at other locations across Ireland.
  • Expenses are reimbursed according to Rowing Ireland’s Travel & Subsistence Policy, available upon request.
  • New Directors are required to complete induction training arranged by Rowing Ireland.
  • Independent Directors are expected to participate in one or more committees.
  • The term of service is three years.

This position offers a significant opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of Rowing Ireland while making a meaningful impact on the sporting community.
